Biography
I acknowledge that the studio I work from is on traditional country of the Jagera and Yuggera people. I pay respect to Elders past and present. I recognise and respect their cultural heritage, beliefs and relationship with the land, which continue to be important to the Jagera and Yuggera people living today.
As a sculptor I am interested in the act of making, the significant roles that objects play in our lives and the ways form and material interplay with the elements. I place tactility and the precious nature of art objects into question by making work that conjures touch or forms that can adapt to their surroundings to be reused.
My process includes the creation of raw, neutral forms to which I intervene with space, suggested space, and anticipated movement. My practice is directed by a drive to create with my own hands and I use this as motivation to interrogate observational and material capabilities. My colour palette is elemental as it is derived from the raw materials I work with and the forms are simple, reflecting the search for an essence in each piece.
The objects and installations I create are static in nature and the core of the work resides in the mind between the object and the movement it alludes to. In this way, suggestion has become a subject matter; raising questions and feelings that spur on the mind.
I was born and raised in Brisbane, Australia which is where I currently live and work. I completed a Bachelor of Visual Arts in 2008 and have worked as an art handler and installer. I started a woodworking design business in 2014 which still operates today. In the last two years I have turned my attention to sculpture. In November 2020 I presented my debut solo exhibition where many pieces were collected by Brisbane locals. Also, that year I worked as an artist assistant to Lincoln Austin, a renowned Australian sculptor, who has since taken up a role as my mentor.
